Criminal Cases in the Clarke County Courts
Clarke County is part of Alabama's First Judicial Circuit. The Clarke Circuit Clerk keeps the files for both Circuit Court and District Court. Circuit Court has original jurisdiction over felonies and lesser offenses joined to a felony case. District Court handles most state misdemeanors, felony preliminary hearings, and certain non-capital felony guilty pleas before indictment. Both sets of Clarke County criminal court records are kept through the same clerk, but their case types and court events differ.
Municipal courts keep another layer. Jackson, Thomasville, Grove Hill, and Coffeeville handle local ordinance, traffic, and misdemeanor matters within city jurisdiction. Clarke County CC and DC Cases

The Alabama Unified Judicial System separately provides statewide court information, forms, and rules. Just One Look offers a name route and a case-number route after account creation and payment. Use the case number when it is known. A name search can return several cases and may miss a record held by a municipal court, a federal court, or a protected division.

- Use the complete Alabama case number when possible. For a name search, enter the requested identity fields carefully.
- Confirm Clarke County and identify CC, DC, or TR before treating a result as the sought case.
- Read the status, settings, parties, financial history, and case-action summary. Note the latest disposition entry.
- Ask the Clarke Circuit Clerk for missing images, older material, paper copies, or certified records.

What the Case File Shows

Clarke County Court Copies and Certification
Remote access is only one path to Clarke County court records. Just One Look charges $5 for the first 20 pages of document images and $0.50 for each added page. Current Rule 30 material lists clerk copies at $0.25 per page for fewer than 20 pages, $0.50 per page when more than 20 pages are copied, and $5 for certification. Give clerk staff the Clarke County case number, party name, approximate filing year, court division, and exact document sought. Ask for the current copy, certification, postage, and archive costs before ordering. Older or non-electronic files may require staff retrieval even when the public index confirms the case.

Stages of a Criminal Case
A Clarke County prosecution can begin with a complaint and warrant or with another lawful charging route. District Court handles early felony proceedings, including a preliminary hearing. A grand jury may return an indictment. Circuit Court then handles arraignment, motions, plea or trial, judgment, and sentence for a felony. Some cases end before trial through dismissal, nolle prosequi, or an accepted plea.

The docket's order matters. A charge first shown in a complaint may change before indictment or judgment. Read the final disposition for each count instead of treating the first event as the outcome.
Reading Clarke County Case Dispositions
Alabama court terms describe distinct results. "Guilty as charged" records a conviction on the filed offense, while "guilty of a lesser charge" identifies a different resolved offense. "Not guilty" is an acquittal. "Nolle prossed" means the prosecution formally chose not to continue that charge. "Case dismissed" also ends the charge without a conviction, but by a different procedural route.
Pending means more investigation or court action remains. It is not a disposition. A later court result may not yet appear on an ALEA criminal-history record if the disposition has not been matched to the fingerprint-supported arrest cycle. For one's own record, compare the court judgment with the ALEA record and use the formal challenge process if they disagree.
Clarke County Federal Case Search
A federal case arising in Clarke County is not stored by the Circuit Clerk. Clarke County falls within the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, and charging is handled through the U.S. Attorney's Office for that district. PACER provides federal docket sheets and many filed documents after account registration. Sealed filings, grand-jury material, and protected identifiers remain outside public view.

Access & Restrictions
Public trial-court access does not make every Clarke County case or every field public. Juvenile, youthful-offender, sealed, protected, and expunged records are outside ordinary search. Victim identifiers, financial account data, and other protected details may be redacted. An online result can also omit an older image or material that must be retrieved by clerk staff.
Alabama's general public-record law does not impose the newer executive-branch request timelines on judicial records. Court-file requests follow judicial rules and clerk procedures. Ask for an existing record with reasonable detail: case number, name, approximate year, division, and exact document. If a public Clarke County case does not appear online, contact the clerk rather than concluding it does not exist.
An expunged matter may stop appearing in ordinary public searches even though limited access remains for criminal-justice or other authorized purposes. Alabama Circuit Courts control expungement petitions. Keep a certified copy of any signed order and compare it with the Clarke County docket if a record that should be restricted still appears through an official channel.
